CELINE’s Cruise 2009, The playful graceFor CELINE’s Cruise Collection, Ivana Omazic has chosen wildlife illustrations by the American artist Charley Harper (4 August 1922 - 10 June 2007) as the main theme. The rights to the fi ve drawings – “Flamingo” (1958), “Swallows” (1960), the shoal of fish from “Skipping School” (1977), “Starlings” (1959) and “Penguins” (1960) – have been acquired by CELINE to be added as a motif, reproduced as a print or used in leather appliqués on leather goods. This modernist artist, who came from a family of Virginian farmers, studied and taught at the Art Academy of Cincinatti. His numerous illustrations in the style of minimal realism, focusing on nature and animals, have been widely published. Distilled visual effects inspired by cubism combined with a vivid palette give his pared-down graphics a humorous, joyful tone that is bursting with life. The fresh, naive spirit of Charley Harper’s stylised fl ora and fauna infuses the collection with an ultra-graphic, childlike touch expressed in dynamic colours. The playful grace of Charley Harper’s drawings slips into fresh silks and cottons and is refl ected in colourful sequins on the costume jewellery as well as the bags and shoes in the Cruise line, whose buckles and clasps adopt the geometry of the motifs. The CELINE Cruise collection has also drawn its inspiration from the supple, fl uid forms of boat sails, an allusion which is underlined by the nautical-style trimmings akin to yacht ropes added to necklines or as a drawstring on the light boots. The “bubble” silhouette, knitwear, boleros and skirts with horsehair hems are also one of the themes dear to Ivana Omazic, offering a simple and fresh expression of femininity. Slim trousers and cigarette pants with a tapered cut that stop above the ankle contrast with flowing tops. The delectable, incredibly fresh range of shades includes glacier, lagoon, navy, pale pink, twilight, coral, fl amingo and red in contrast to a neutral palette made up of sand, dove beige, shark grey and anthracite.
